This structure was conceived to fit into a 1930’s community, and is situated within a ring of 27 towering Hemlocks, overlooking a pond. It is strategically designed to float between the tree roots by virtue of being built upon caissons- meaning very few piers that were positioned to not harm the trees that give it its earthy scale amongst the towering trees.
Its floor plan is configured like a snow angel, and its shingle roofs are tipped up to the sky. It is meant to serve as a family chapel for about 20, and connects to an adjacent prayer labyrinth.
It contains a worship space with a handmade altar by Swallowtail Studio, an indigenous stone fireplace, a writing room, a meditation room, a refreshment pantry, bathroom, coatroom, and an entry vestibule.
The walls and doors are designed in circumferential arcs, with doors curving and arching. Windows were recycled from 1920’s steel windows and bronze hardware. All wall and ceiling materials were reclaimed from white oak barn beams.
